Praying through the week - 1st - 7th December 2008
Monday 1st: Today is being kept as World Aids Day. Please remember the many people with HIV, and those affected by it including orphaned children who have to care for siblings. Pray for agencies caring for sufferers, and that anti-retroviral drugs may be made freely available, especially in Africa where the need is greatest.
Tuesday 2nd: Continue to pray for people affectedby the economic situation, losing jobs and homes. Pray for new thinking about sustainable economics, for the work of the "New Economic Foundation" and its wider acceptance - the wellbeing of our grandchildren depend on there being different values and practices in society.
Wednesday 3rd: The International Conference on Financing for Development is taking place in Qatar this week. This aims to make it easier for developing nations to escape poverty through grants, but this is resisted by richer nations. Pray that it may achieve something positive. Thursday 4th: The insecurity brought about by the economic crisis is felt keenly at the workplace. this gives great opportunities for the "Chaplaincy to People at Work": so pray for the Cambridgeshire chaplain, Canon Chris Savage, in the work he does. Friday 5th: Give thanks for the life of Joan Smart. Pray for her relatives and friends who mourn her passing, that they may be comforted by the hope we have in Christ, and be strengthened by Him at her funeral today.
Saturday 6th: Remember local church groups and other organisations who seek to alleviate the hardship experienced by the hundreds of refugees in this country. Pray that those whose lives would be threatened if they return home will be fairly treated by the authorities and allowed to remain and work. Sunday 7th: As we gather for worship today, thank God for our Lord Jesus Christ and for the Kingdom of Peace and Justice that He came to bring. Pray that it may be extended, as others accept Him as their Saviour and Lord.
