Knit and Natter

knitting

Knit and Natter has by tradition, been a group of older ladies who have needed a place to meet their friends in a social situation for fun and mutual support. We have always been a group who set out to knit for others, first by making blankets which were distributed to various places which needed them and more recently by supporting the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child Christmas boxes for children in Eastern Europe who had very little, knitting hats, scarves, and gloves throughout the year ready for the boxing in November. We also support Hope and Aid Direct by supplying knitted blankets good used warm clothing and baby clothes which are sent to Eastern Europe and Africa.

This has always been an active group whose members willingly do what they can for others. It's membership is open to all unconditionally. Although some of our members are regular church goers, many more are not and some are of another faith or none at all. We welcome all old or not so old but housebound. The group is run by volunteers from church and is seen as "under the umbrella" of the church. As such, the meeting starts with a reflective reading and prayers and we have a simple communion service once a term. The group is self funding as our fund raising events raise money to subsidise outings and other events.

Getting together and going out

We meet every Thursday afternoon at 1.00pm in the Octagon and it runs until around 3.00pm. In addition to the weekly meetings, we hold coffee Mornings on the third Saturday of most months. About three times a year we hold a lunch open to all members and their friends or relations and any older people in our community.

We have around four outings a year, again open to anyone who would like to join us,[space permitting]. We have been to several seaside venues, garden centres and special events in the vicinity such as the Wisbech Rose Fair. During the winter months, we try to provide a few Saturday afternoon events like a tea party and a film. In August we have a garden party for members and friends with musical entertainment and a traditional summer afternoon tea.

Being there

The main aim of those working with this group is to provide the opportunities for all to meet to have fellowship and feel welcome, useful, needed and loved. We feel there should always be something to look forward to, someone to share a worry with and someone who can help out in a crisis.

You can help us

We are always grateful to receive double knitting wool preferably in bright colours, small items of bric-a-brac to sell at our coffee mornings and unwanted jewellery, particularly beads, to sell or for the ladies to recycle into beautiful new creations.

We would love to see you at our monthly coffee mornings which generally take place on the third Saturday of the month in the Octagon 10.00 until 12.00 noon. You can meet us, have a cup of coffee, buy some home made cakes and peruse our sales tables.

Welcome

We always welcome new members from our Bar Hill Community. If you would like some company and meet some new people, either contact me for more details or just drop in on a Thursday afternoon at the Octagon.

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.
